In 2018, when Good Chemistry CEO Matt Huron opened the first cannabis dispensary in Worcester, he already had 20 years of experience in an industry that was brand-new to the Bay State.
“We know what we’re doing and we pride ourselves on growing quality cannabis,” Huron said about the decision to start business in Massachusetts. “It would be a disservice for us, with the skills that we had and the customers, to not move into that space.”
“I’ve fortunately managed to stay independently owned and operated and will continue to do so as long as I can,” he said.
Huron has two motivations for staying in the business. First is what he says is a love and fascination for creating high-quality cannabis products. He said he’s done “a zillion” experiments with cannabis, putting years into the school of hard knocks to create the market’s best. “The quality of the cannabis has just always been a main focus for us,” he said.
His second, and more personal, motivation is the impact cannabis had on his father and his partner, who both had HIV/AIDS. As the couple’s health started to decline, they found therapeutic benefits from cannabis, according to Huron.
“It was really helping them manage pain and appetite,” he said. In Huron’s now 22 years of experience, he said he’s had customers come in crying saying they have beaten addictions to opioids or gotten through chemotherapy using cannabis products.
